“Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.” -  Anthony J. D'Angelo

There is an evolution happening in the education industry, it’s going from traditional to digital, the pattern is changing, in this digital era there are so many new things happening around the globe that we have to keep up with these changes happening. One such change that is happening slowly is that the education is going digital.

The traditional way of education that we have been seeing is that a teaching happens in a classroom is with students and with a teacher having a blackboard, chalk, duster and certain handwritten notes gone are these days. But in today’s era education going digital the education pattern is teaching virtually, learning through the web by watching videos, reading presentations, books being converted to pdfs or e-books.

In our traditional way of teaching, students had textbooks for different subjects, and each subject had a different notebook to write notes in. The textbooks and notebooks has been like a burden to the students, carrying that weight everyday … Uff! I remember the weight we had to carry everyday to school. But when education is going digital the students will have e-books, they will not have to carry the weight everyday all they need is an electronic device like a laptop or a tablet with sufficient storage memory to store their e-books and projects.

Our textbook after a certain time gets old and outdated, new edition gets launched at least every year with a few modifications, as per the requirement of the syllabus. Textbooks are expensive, heavy, affecting the environment by cutting down trees to make paper for out textbooks. Where as in the digital model of education – the e-books are available at a lesser cost than the textbooks, only the weight the student carries is the movable device like a laptop or a tablet, latest versions get released regularly.

In traditional education the students can take the books on rent for a short period of time where as in the digital education the students can also rent the e-books, or read free e-books. Certain websites are available where a student can rent a book and also decide for how long does the student plan to rent it. For example - Chegg.com and Kindle Store

These days teachers are also changing their method of teaching in classrooms - they are using audio, video and presentations to teach. There are projectors installed in every classroom and also a computer is given so that the media can be displayed to students while teaching.

In recent times, Education going Digital can be seen with few universities who have distance education programs for students where the teaching is online and purely virtual. In this there is a benefit to both students and the university. In the situation of the university they have to just share the study material and collect projects and conduct the exams and arrange the certification of the ones who have undergone the exam; in the case of students they can have their flexibility to decide study time, the study material is available to them 24x7 and is with them anywhere they go, they just need to carry a device connected with internet, and submit the project and give the exam on time to get the degree.

There are many companies who are going for education going digital, like Educomp, EdServe, Akash, GTT etc, who are going for teaching students with the help of the digital world.
For example - Global Talent Track (GTT) – is a company believing in empowerment through employability. For the last 2 years, GTT has been training ITI Kerala students in communications skills and industry readiness through virtual conferencing. The trainers are situated in GTT’s head office Pune and students are across various small towns in Kerala. GTT has successfully trained and evaluated more than 3000 students through this model who feel a great value add to their confidence after the training. Recently GTT has been awarded at state and national level for this innovative approach to learning.

In today’s digital era the students can learn in the virtual mode with the help of study materials, audio and videos available online for free. The students can learn online through MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course) which is available to them 24x7 and for free. For example: Coursera, eDx, Udacity etc. provide variety of specialization at a nominal cost with certification.

The digital tools are helping students to educate themselves. These days the students are more tech savvy and so is their pattern of learning changing. They can learn at their own pace and can grow and educate themselves with the help of a internet connected device, where they can choose their own medium of education can be a video, audio or text as in e-book.
