Ms. Vibha Khosla, Principal, Modern School, Vasant Vihar

As a school Principal, I often reflect on the purpose of education in a rapidly changing world. The National Education Policy 2020 reaffirms a belief educators have long held that education must go beyond examinations and nurture the whole child. It calls for a shift towards holistic, skill-based, and experiential learning, preparing students not only for careers, but for life.

In an age where information is readily available and professional landscapes are constantly evolving, academic knowledge alone is insufficient. What truly empowers students are skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and emotional intelligence. Skill education helps learners apply knowledge meaningfully, adapt to change, and face challenges with confidence. NEP 2020 strongly advocates this move from rote learning to competency-based education, making learning more relevant and engaging.

At Modern School, Vasant Vihar, we consciously translate this vision into everyday practice by providing students with a plethora of learning exposures. From academic enrichment programmes, interdisciplinary projects, sports, and performing arts to debates, Model United Nations, leadership forums, community outreach, and entrepreneurship initiatives, students are encouraged to explore, experiment, and express themselves. Such diverse platforms help children discover their strengths, develop new skills, and step beyond their comfort zones.

One of the most meaningful outcomes of these experiences is the development of resilience. Through participation, performance, and perseverance, students learn to handle pressure, accept feedback, and grow from setbacks. NEP 2020 rightly emphasises social and emotional learning, recognising that emotional strength and adaptability are as vital as intellectual ability. When students learn that failure is part of the learning process, they develop grit, self-belief, and the courage to try again.

Entrepreneurial skills further strengthen this foundation. While not every child will become an entrepreneur, skills such as initiative, innovation, leadership, decision-making, and financial awareness are invaluable across professions. At Modern School, Vasant Vihar, students are encouraged to think independently, take responsibility, and become go-getters-individuals who identify opportunities and work purposefully towards solutions.

At its core, skill education is deeply human. It nurtures empathy, ethical thinking, teamwork, and respect for diversity. When aligned with the vision of NEP 2020, it enables schools to shape not just successful professionals, but confident, resilient, and compassionate individuals-ready to contribute meaningfully to society.

Education, after all, is not merely about producing achievers, but about nurturing balanced human beings with clarity of thought, strength of character, and the courage to lead.
