The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the B. Ed. Course of Aligarh Muslim University Murshidabad Centre today (December 7, 2013) at Jangipur.
Speaking on the occasion, the President said the AMU Centre at Murshidabad was started to carry forward the glorious legacy of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, an icon of India’s modern education and founder of the Aligarh Muslim University. Its inception represented a commitment to the nation to fight the scourge of educational backwardness and social deprivation. Since then, the Centre has fulfilled the long cherished educational aspirations of the people of the region. It has also helped in increasing the potential of the youth to enter into rewarding careers. He expressed his hope that it will contribute, in no small measure, to the attainment of the national goal of equity, access and inclusion in education.

Speaking on the occasion, the President said Visva-Bharati is the culminating product of a radical experiment on education system by its founder, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore.
Tagore brought education into the open, and near to the nature. Tagore knew that the cause of misery was the drifting away from nature by mankind. The growing disconnect of man with nature continues to this day. Modern education in India must incorporate the beautiful ideas embedded in Tagore’s ‘natural education’. Vice President Addresses at Valedictory Function of Quartoseptcentennial (175 Years) of Madras Christian College
The Vice President of India Shri M. Hamid Ansari has said that the importance of faith and values in education has been emphasized in human society down the ages. Aristotle rightly said that “educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all”. More recently, Gandhi ji stressed that literary education is of no value, if it is not able to build up a sound character. If the young friends in the audience follow these dicta, they will improve themselves and at the same time contribute to making this world a much better place for all to live in. Addressing at the “Valedictory Function of the Quartoseptcentennial (175 years) of Madras Christian College (MCC)” in Chennai, Tamil Nadu today, he has said that the goal of education is not to produce machine-like humans. It is to inculcate in them a social conscience so that they build a fine balance between the heart and mind. True education should equip individuals to live creatively, responsibly, and peacefully and to become agents of change for a better society.
The Vice President of India Shri M. Hamid Ansari has said that as India marches ahead on the path of rapid economic growth and development, the imperative of inclusion of the minority communities in the development process cannot be overemphasized. Neither can the maintenance of social harmony and peaceful coexistence amongst various religious, ethnic and linguistic groups in our diverse society. Addressing at the “Inauguration of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of the New College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu” today, he has said that according to the 2001 census, recognised religious minorities comprise 18.4% of our population, which translates into approximately 185 million people. This number today could be around 220 million. If we include others who are claiming inclusion in this category, it could be said in general terms that every fifth Indian citizen belongs to a religious minority. The progress and well being of such a large segment of our population is a necessity to enable us to realize our destiny of becoming a modern, progressive and prosperous state.
Following is the text of Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh’s speech at the Conference of Directors of NITs in New Delhi today:
“Let me begin by thanking Respected Rashtrapati ji for having organized this conference and for taking an active interest in issues concerning higher education. In February last year he had called a conference of Vice-chancellors of Central Universities and I understand a second one will be convened shortly. I am sure these initiatives will be of great benefit to the cause of higher education in our country and would also encourage others in their efforts to strengthen the higher education system.
The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are all institutions of national importance. They contribute substantially to the technical man-power requirements of the country’s expanding economy. This is evident from the fact that in the year 2012-13, their intake of undergraduate students was over 15000 and that of post-graduate students about 11000. They are expected to produce engineering graduates comparable in quality to those produced buy our premier institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India and the University Grants Commission (UGC) held a day-long meeting with select Autonomous Colleges and State Government representatives on 7th October, 2013 at India International Centre, New Delhi to discuss their problems. This was the first exclusive meeting of the Principals of Autonomous Colleges and State Government representatives with MHRD and the UGC, after the formulation of the scheme by the UGC a few decade ago. The Secretary, Higher Education shared with them the proposed initiatives for bringing about reforms in affiliation system which has become the bane of Higher Education system in the country. He also informed them about the provisions of the recently approved Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), a scheme of MHRD wherein autonomous colleges desirous of converting themselves into universities can be provided with funding upto Rs.55 crores each. The total amount earmarked for XII FYP for this scheme is Rs.2475 crores.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs last evening approved about one lakh crore Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA). It is a new centrally sponsored scheme for higher education which will spread over two plan periods (XIIth and XIIIth). It will focus on state higher educational institutions. It will be a new flagship scheme of the government that will pave the way for far reaching reforms at the state level. A total of 316 state public universities and 13,024 colleges will be covered under RUSA.

Dr. Obaidullah Obaid Minister of Higher Education of Afghanistan had a meeting with Hon’ble Minister of Human Resource Development, Dr. M.M. Pallam Raju on 22nd August, 2013. He had a discussion with the HRM on cooperation in higher education.
Dr. Obaidullah expressed his appreciation and gratitude for the assistance by the Government of India and by the Ministry of Human Resource Development for reconstruction and capacity development in Afghanistan. He also highlighted the initiatives like building up of schools, teacher training and capacity building and curriculum development etc., for Afghanistan. He also thanked the Government of India for different scholarships provided to the Afghan students. He also highlighted the fact that at present more than 5000 students are studying in Higher Education Institutions in India that is providing an immense capacity building support for the future generations of Afghanistan.
